Facebook Overview

  • Scope: Over 500 million
  • Homepage: “Wall” with a “stream” of your friends’ updates

Terminology

  • Friend = to connect with someone
  • What’s on your mind? = Share a status update, link, photo or video
  • Like = Quick way of giving approval without leaving a comment
  • Comment = Add feedback.  Use to build relationships by giving valuable input or just sending well-wishes
  • Wall = Stream of most recent activity

Profile

  • Do not recommend this for business – OK to mention your business through your Profile, but Facebook rules say to use a Page to represent a business.
  • Your individual page with 5000 friends max
  • Status messages
  • Multimedia profiles – photos, videos, notes, applications
  • Events
  • Granular privacy settings (item-by-item, friend-by-friend)

Pages (Business page)

  • Recommended as a quick way for businesses to get started on Facebook
  • No maximum on number of fans
  • Multiple customizable tabs
    • Wall tab closely resembles the Wall tab on a user profile
    • Applications available for tabs, including photos, video, events, reviews, discussions, YouTube and Slideshare
    • Each tab has its own URL, so they can be used as the landing Page for your Facebook Ads and off-site promotion
  • Statuses will appear in Fans’ News Feeds.
  • Messaging to entire fan base – Send promotions and special offers to your customers.
  • Each tab is a unique URL and landing page
    • Great for search engine optimization (SEO)
    • Target specific audiences: new contacts v. current fans
  • “Insights” – Track user stats and fans’ engagement with posts from your Page

    • Pull in your blog and/or status updates from other social media sites
